Our work
The diverse and widespread nature of the commercial fishing sector means that staying in touch with industry news, and with each other, is often difficult. The Federation plays an important role as a conduit for communication and the dissemination of information through our monthly member newsletters, and opportunities to connect and socialise through an annual conference and AGM.
Policy positions are driven by member interests, and cover everything from fisheries management to health and safety, levies and fishing gear innovation.
On our members’ behalf, the Federation:
Distributes reputable, trusted industry news and resources.
Submits on central and local government consultations that impact the commercial fishing industry.
Engages with relevant Ministers and politicians (such as the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries, Minister for the Environment and Minister of Transport) on members’ behalf.
Participates in industry panels and on national fisheries and maritime policy development.
Provides accurate, open and informative information to media.
Creates opportunities for members’ ongoing learning and professional development about the latest fishing gear innovations, data and technology, health and safety, and protecting taonga marine species.
Supports maritime health and safety and other charitable organisations.
