Devastation for Stewart Island Oyster Farmers

The Southland Times reported recently that the Ministry for Primary Industries following the detection of the parasite bonamia ostreae, a parasite which can cause more than 90% mortality in oysters,has decided to remove the infected oysters from two Stewart Island farms.

While the parasite has not been found in Foveaux Strait oyster beds the industry is continuing to keep a watchful eye.
